Kopi menjadi komoditas ekonomi penting di dunia islam. Minuman kopi betul-betul populer di kalangan para peziarah di kota Mekah, meskipun pernah sebagian kali diucapkan sebagai minuman terlarang. Para peziarah meminum kopi untuk konsisten terjaga dikala beribadah di malam hari.

Melainkan upaya ini gagal kerena tanaman hal yang demikian rusak oleh gempa bumi dan banjir.
Upaya kedua dilaksanakan pada tahun 1699 dengan mendatangkan stek pohon kopi dari Malabar. Pada tahun 1706 sampel kopi yang dihasilkan dari tanaman di Jawa dikirim ke negeri Belanda untuk diteliti di Kebun Raya Amsterdam. Hasilnya sukses besar, kopi yang dihasilkan mempunyai kualitas yang sungguh-sungguh bagus. Berikutnya tanaman kopi ini dihasilkan bibit bagi segala perkebunan yang dioptimalkan di Indonesia. Belanda pun memperluas areal budidaya kopi ke Sumatera, Sulawesi, Bali, Timor dan pulau-pulau lainnya di Indonesia.

Pada tahun 1878 terjadi tragedi yang memilukan. Hampir segala perkebunan kopi yang ada di Indonesia khususnya di dataran rendah rusak terserang penyakit karat daun atau Hemileia vastatrix (HV). Usaha kali ini sukses, sampai ketika ini perkebunan-perkebunan kopi robusta yang ada di dataran rendah bisa bertahan.
Pasca kemerdekaan Indonesia tahun 1945, segala perkebunan kopi Belanda yang ada di Indonesia di nasionalisasi. Semenjak itu Belanda tak lagi menjadi pemasok kopi dunia.
