| Berbagai literatur mencatat tanaman kopi berasal dari Abyssinia, nama daerah lawas di Afrika yang dikala ini meliputi kawasan negara Etiopia dan Eritrea. Tapi tidak banyak diketahui bagaimana orang-orang Abyssinia memanfaatkan tanaman kopi. Kopi sebagai minuman pertama kali dipopulerkan oleh orang-orang Arab. Biji kopi dari Abyssinia dibawa oleh para pedagang Arab ke Yaman dan mulai menjadi komoditi komersial.

Memasuki abad ke-17 orang-orang Eropa mulai mengembangkan perkebunan kopi sendiri. Pertama-tama nereka mengembangkannya di Eropa, namun iklim di sana tidak sesuai untuk tanaman kopi. Kemudian mereka mencoba membudidayakan tanaman tersebut di daerah jajahannya yang tersebar di beraneka penjuru bumi. Upayanya berhasil, orang-orang Eropa mampu menggeser dominasi bangsa Arab dalam memproduksi kopi.

Salah satu pusat produksi kopi dunia ada di Pulau Jawa yang dikembangkan bangsa Belanda. Untuk masa tertentu kopi dari Jawa sempat mendominasi pasar kopi dunia. Dikala itu secangkir kopi lebih popular dengan sebutan “Cup of Java” atau “Secangkir Jawa”.
Dokumen tertulis yang paling tua perihal kopi ditemukan dalam catatan Al Razi (850-922) seorang ilmuwan muslim yang juga pakar kedokteran. Dia menyebut suatu minuman yang ciri-cirinya mirip kopi dengan sebutan bunshum.
Catatan ini diperkuat oleh seorang spesialis kedokteran setelahnya, Ibnu Sina (980-1037 ), yang membuktikan sesuatu biji yang dapat diseduh dan bermanfaat menyembuhkan salah satu penyakit perut. Seluruh keterangan yang diberi Ibnu Sina mengacu pada ciri-ciri kopi yang kita ketahui dikala ini. Dia menyebut minuman tersebut bunshum dan bijinya dengan nama bun.
Kopi menjadi komoditi ekonomi penting di dunia islam. Minuman kopi amat populer di kalangan para peziarah di kota Mekah, walaupun pernah beberapa kali diucapkan sebagai minuman terlarang. Para peziarah meminum kopi untuk konsisten terjaga ketika beribadah di malam hari.

Popularitas kopi kian meluas di masa kekhalifahan Turki Ustmani. Di ceritakan minuman kopi menjadi sajian utama di tiap perayaan di Istambul. Di masa ini juga kopi mulai disukai orang-orang Eropa.
Di permulaan tahun 1600-an para pedagang di Venesia membeli kopi dari pelabuhan Mocha di Yaman. Dari daerah ini menyebar ke daerah Eropa lainnya. Kemudian pada tahun 1668 kopi mulai menyeberang samudera Atlantik dan tiba di New York, kala itu masih menjadi kooni Belanda.
Sejarah kopi di Indonesia diawali pada tahun 1696 ketika Belanda membawa kopi dari Malabar, India, ke Jawa. Mereka membudidayakan tanaman kopi hal yang demikian di Kedawung, sebuah perkebunan yang terletak dekat Batavia. Melainkan upaya ini gagal kerena tanaman tersebut rusak oleh gempa bumi dan banjir.
Upaya kedua dilaksanakan pada tahun 1699 dengan mendatangkan stek pohon kopi dari Malabar. Pada tahun 1706 sampel kopi yang dibuat dari tanaman di Jawa dikirim ke negeri Belanda untuk diteliti di Kebun Raya Amsterdam. Kesudahannya berhasil besar, kopi yang diciptakan memiliki kwalitas yang sangat bagus. Selanjutnya tanaman kopi ini diwujudkan bibit bagi semua perkebunan yang dioptimalkan di Indonesia. Belanda malahan memperluas areal budidaya kopi ke Sumatera, Sulawesi, Bali, Timor dan pulau-pulau lainnya di Indonesia.

Pada tahun 1878 terjadi tragedi yang memilukan. Hampir seluruh perkebunan kopi yang ada di Indonesia lebih-lebih di dataran rendah rusak terserang penyakit karat daun atau Hemileia vastatrix (HV). Kala itu segala tanaman kopi yang ada di Indonesia yakni jenis Arabika (Coffea arabica). Untuk menanggulanginya, Belanda mendatangkan spesies kopi liberika (Coffea liberica) yang diperkirakan lebih bendung kepada penyakit karat daun.
Hingga sebagian tahun lamanya, kopi liberika menggantikan kopi arabika di perkebunan dataran rendah. Di pasar Eropa kopi liberika ketika itu dihargai sama dengan arabika. Namun rupanya tanaman kopi liberika juga mengalami hal yang sama, rusak terserang karat daun. Kemudian pada tahun 1907 Belanda mendatangkan spesies lain adalah kopi robusta (Coffea canephora). Usaha kali ini berhasil, hingga dikala ini perkebunan-perkebunan kopi robusta yang ada di dataran rendah bisa bertahan.
Pasca kemerdekaan Indonesia tahun 1945, semua perkebunan kopi Belanda yang ada di Indonesia di nasionalisasi. Semenjak itu Belanda tidak lagi menjadi pemasok kopi dunia.
